The Importance of Lighting For Parrots
It is very critical that you provide the necessary amount of lighting for parrots that are housed indoors to ensure they are healthy and happy. Just like humans, birds also depend on ultraviolet rays from the sun for the purpose of metabolic processes, especially vitamin D production. As indoor birds may not receive adequate sunlight at all, we need to find a substitute lighting for these parrots.
It is not adequate just simply placing the cage near a window because the window glass or plastic could block about 99 percent of the beneficial ultraviolet rays. Such lighting for parrots will provide them the necessary warmth from sunlight streaming through a window but they will not get the light waves they need to synthesize vitamins.
Some of these full spectrum bulbs on the market such Ott-Lites, Vita-Lites, Verilux, and Chromalux are the popular brands that you can buy from pet shops that can provide artificial sunlight near the cage. You can choose from a variety of fixtures and styles that will best suit your needs. This form of lighting for parrots will closely mimic natural sunlight, and will help to keep your birds healthy and happy.
Remember you should never place a bird cage directly in front of a window that receives full sunlight which may cause some harm or overheating to your parrots.
